What looks like a piece of black coal is actually rock candy  (coloured and caramalized sugar lumbs), which Italian children most likely  will find in their socks on the morning of January the 6th. Traditionally, a witch called Befana will deliver  candy through the chimney for the good kids, coal for the bad ones. In fact usually all of them get black candy coal – every child has been bad at least occasionally during the year!
